Socio-Cultural Issues In India https://arabinda.me/socio-cultural-issues-in-india/ https://arabinda.me/socio-cultural-issues-in-india/#respond Mon, 29 Aug 2022 03:08:08 +0000 https://arabinda.me/?p=3391 Socio-Cultural Issues In India Read More »

]]>
India is a country of a variety of cultures and religions. The integrity through which Indians follow their culture can be rarely seen in other countries. However, not all the old cultures and myths benefit people. There are many issues related to Indian culture and society which are a matter of discussion. These socio-cultural issues in India are making the Indian society less sympathetic than it should be. Let’s discuss some of these socio-cultural issues in India.

The Dowry System

The Dowry System has been indulged in the marriage tradition of India from a time indefinite. This system is not helping the society in its development in any way but still it is prevalent in India. Dowry is a socio-cultural issue because it provides harm to the women of the society.

We see thousands of incidents daily where girls are burnt alive by their in-laws in desire of dowry. Groom even refuses to marry the bride on the day of marriage if he doesn’t get the dowry. However there are laws made to control the dowry related crimes but girls still suffer due to dowry in India. The domestic violence, the abuse a girl faces due to dowry reproaches us that why this system is still prevalent in India.

Gender Inequality

Gender inequality and Gender discrimination are one of the major Socio-Cultural Issues in India. There are still some parents who become sad when a girl child is born. In many areas, girls are not given proper education and opportunities to build their career. According to the data of the National Sample Survey, the male and female literacy rate were 81.5% and 64.6% respectively in 2017-18. This data clearly shows the proof of gender inequality in India.

However, the condition of women was worse in ancient India. They had hardly any freedom in their life. The marriages of women were fixed without asking their choices. Women were forced to live in ‘Pardah’ and ‘Ghoonghat’. They were usually not allowed to work outside their home and earn money.

The sad truth is that even today many patriarchal families believe that the sole responsibility of a woman is to look after her children, home and serve her husband. Most of the girls in India are still not allowed to talk with boys and to choose their life partner. We often hear how conservative families kill and abandon their daughters if they do love marriage.

While men are free to choose their favourite careers, girls are forced to choose teaching as their profession considering it safe for them. There are only very few girls who can fulfill their unusual dream by fighting with patriarchal society. It is very difficult to assume whether the gender discrimination against women will ever end in India.

Parents are given the position of God in Indian society. However, today’s children hardly bother about their responsibility towards their parents. The way older parents are abandoned by their children is a serious socio-cultural issue in India. As the society is getting more developed and modern, the elderly related issues are also increasing.

Adults have become so busy in their careers and competition that they hardly care for their old parents. In the end, the old parents are bound to spend their life lonely. Recently, the Supreme Court of India has reformed a law related to elderly issues. According to the new rule, parents can take back their gifted property from their children if the children don’t look after them.

Communalism

Communalism is the term used for the division of people on the basis of religion, ideology and ethics. It is one of the most dangerous Socio-Cultural issues in India. The communal riots between different communities, especially between hindu and muslims is a serious issue in India. We all know how the communal riots had taken place when Babri Masjid was destroyed in UP. Similarly, various harmful accidents because of religious differences have been happening since the time of partition.

Poverty

Talking about poverty, then it is a serious Socio-Cultural issue in India. India is getting developed in every field including technological, educational and health. But the situation of poverty is the same as before. During the past few years, poverty has increased in both rural and urban parts of India. In 2012 the number of urban poors was 53 billion and in 2019-20, it is 71 billion. In the same duration, the number of poors increased from 217 million to 270 million in the rural areas.

Unemployment

We don’t discuss any other socio-cultural issues in India more than unemployment. According to the survey of Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy, there were 53 million unemployed people as of Dec, 2021. Between 2012 and 2018, the unemployment rate of 15 to 29 age groups rose from 6% to 18%. There are various causes of unemployment including the increasing population of India. Employment was also affected a lot during the time of COVID-19 and lockdown.

From time to time, the Indian government has tried to create employment opportunities by launching various schemes. The latest Agnipath scheme is also launched for the purpose of reducing unemployment rate in India.

Drug/Alcohol Addiction

Drug or alcohol addiction is a very serious problem in today’s Indian society. Mostly, the unemployed and poor people become the victims of alcohol addiction. Similarly, drug addiction is a serious issue among the youths of India. The drugs are banned in India but illegally they are still consumed by youths. Drug addiction not only kills the future of youths but also force them to suicide. Serious measures should be adopted by the India government to stop drug abuse in the country.

Caste Discrimination

Discrimination on the basis of caste is not a new thing in the Indian society. We very well know how Mahatma Gandhi had fought for the rights of Harijans and removed untouchability from society. The division of people on the basis of caste had been done in ancient India only. The Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and Shudras are the four castes divided on the basis of their superiority. India has become modern but the caste system is still prevalent in India. The upper castes like Brahmins and Kshatriyas still avoid drinking water from SC/STs homes. Not only this, but marrying a girl or boy from lower caste is also considered a sin in orthodox upper caste families.

Conclusion

All these Socio-Cultural issues play a major role in the functioning of Indian society. So, it is not possible to remove these issues overnight. It can’t be assumed how much time India will take to free itself from all the harmful socio-cultural problems. However, small steps from each individual can contribute a lot in solving the issues of society. In the end, it is our responsibility to build a society, where citizens are not discriminated against on the basis of gender and caste. A society which is free of drug abuse, poverty, unemployment, dowry and other Socio-Cultural issues. Let’s join hands and build this new India.

]]>

India is a vast country in terms of both population and area. But still India lacks behind many countries in economic growth. In 2016, the Indian economy had declined due to demonetisation. The economy was again slowed down in 2017 due to the introduction of Goods and Services tax. Overall, India has the sixth largest economy in the world. But there are some basic problems indulged in India, which doesn’t let the country to utilise its full potential in economic growth. Let’s discuss some of these basic economic issues in India.

Low Per Capita Income Of People

One of the primary economic issues in India is low Per Capita income of the people. Per capita income is the average income of a person earned in a specific period of time in the country.  India’s per capita income is very low compared to the per capita income of other countries. For example, In 2014, India’s per capita income was $1,560. In the same year, the USA’s per capita income was 35 times more than India. On the other hand, China’s per capita income in 2014 was 5 times more than India.

There can be different causes for low per capita income in India. One of the main causes is the lack of skills and technical knowledge among people. We know national and international level companies require skilled workers, which India lacks. If there will be no skills in people, obviously they will not get good jobs and salary. As a result, per capita income will be low.

Unequal Distribution Of  Income

Another main problem of the Indian economy is the unequal distribution of wealth among people. While billionaires like Ambani, Adani are becoming more and more wealthier, the number of poors is increasing.

The wealth of Gautam Adani increased from $17 billion to $81 billion in 2002. Ambani’s  income was also raised by $81 billion in 2021. On the other hand, poverty has increased in both rural and urban areas in the past few years. From 2012 to 2019-20, the number of poors increased from 53 billion to 71 billion in urban areas. In the same duration, the number of poors increased from 217 million to 270 million in the rural areas.

According to a report, 1 % of the Indian population has 58% of the total Indian wealth. These data shows how critical the situation of unequal distribution of income in India is. Something should be done as soon as possible to decrease the economic gap between rich and poor. Otherwise, India can’t develop with such a huge difference between the incomes of the people.

Increasing Population

India has the second position in the list of the most populated countries in the world.  The growing population of India is affecting its economy at a larger level. If the population of a country increases, the expense of the government in taking care of the larger population also increases. For example, a government has to take care of the basic needs of people, their food, shelter, and clothes. The government schools and hospitals will have to spend more money on students and patients if the population increases.

Larger population with less skills only increases the economic burden of the government . However, from time to time, the Indian Government has made many efforts to  control the increasing population. We all are aware of the slogan, “Hum Do Humare Do”  given by late PM Indira Gandhi during her reign. This was one of the very significant efforts of  Indira Gandhi to control the population in India. Recently, the UP government is also preparing to implement a population control bill in the state.

Huge Dependence On Agriculture Sector In Indian Economy

More than half the population of India depends on the agriculture sector for employment.  Despite so many people working in the agriculture sector, it doesn’t help the government in economic growth. According to World Bank data, India’s 47% working population was engaged in the agriculture sector in 2014. But, the agriculture sector contributed only 17% of the national income in the same year.

The problem is that in the agriculture sector, the productivity per person is very low. As a result, the total production also becomes low and hence cannot contribute more in the national economy. We need more modern farming tools, high quality seeds and fertilizers to increase the productivity per person in this field.

Unemployment and Underemployment

Unemployment means the condition where people are not getting jobs or a source of income . On the other hand, under-employment refers to the situation where a person, despite being educated and qualified, doesn’t get the job. In India, both unemployment and  under-employment are a serious problem. It is a very common thing to watch educated people sitting at home in India. One of the main causes of unemployment is the inadequate growth of secondary and tertiary sectors.  Between 2012 and 2018, the unemployment rate of 15 to 29 age groups increased from 6% to 18%.

Low rate of Capital Accumulation

Capital Accumulation simply means the way a country increases its wealth and assets. Unfortunately, India has a low rate of  capital accumulation, which is a serious economic issue. Various factors like unemployment, population, poor quality of human capital etc contribute to the low rate of capital accumulation.

The Poor Quality Of Human Capital

Human Capital refers to the different skills and knowledge acquired by a person which can increase the productivity of the work. In India, the quality of human capital is very poor which is a main economic issue. People lack various professional skills which cause low productivity per person.  In 2014, India was positioned at 130 out of 188 countries in the HDI (Human Development Index) report. If a country has to develop, the government should do things to increase the quality of human capital.

Lack Of Technical Knowledge

In India, new technologies are developing everyday. But the problem is people don’t have the required technical knowledge to operate these technologies. As a result, despite having modern technologies, India is not able to fully utilise them for economic growth.

Under-use Of Natural Resources

India has plenty of natural resources, but due to different reasons, they are under-used. For example, many of the resources are present in the inaccessible regions where people can’t reach. India needs new and expensive technologies to access these resources. If India is ever capable of utilising all its natural resources like land, water and minerals, the economic growth will surely touch the sky that day.

Inadequate Growth Of Infrastructure

The inadequate growth of  infrastructure has been a serious problem in India. Infrastructure includes transportation facilities, electricity, banking facilities, educational institutions, hospitals etc. India still lacks to provide proper transportation to people. Many accidents happen everyday due to the road dumps. People still run to big cities for medical purposes. This shows that adequate and qualitative hospitals are not available in small cities. Same goes with the educational institutes. Students travel from one place to another in search of qualitative education. All these things hint that India has to work a lot on its infrastructure development.

At last we can say that there are many sectors in India which need improvement and development. Unemployment, unequal wealth distribution, lack of infrastructure, poor human quality, these are the basic obstacles in India’s economic growth. Until and unless, these sectors will not develop, our country will also not develop.

Are We Happier Than Our Forefathers? https://arabinda.me/are-we-happier-than-our-forefathers/ https://arabinda.me/are-we-happier-than-our-forefathers/#respond Wed, 06 Jul 2022 05:57:14 +0000 https://arabinda.me/?p=2643 Are We Happier Than Our Forefathers? Read More »

]]>
Happiness is something which is very difficult to find in today’s busy world. We are so busy in making our careers that we have lost ourselves somewhere. We rather prefer to fake happiness on social media than to be really happy. As the time is passing, we are becoming more and more developed. We are using  new  technologies, are more educated and have better health facilities than our older generations. But, here a question arises, ‘Are we happier than our forefathers or ancestors?’

We have got every materialistic thing better than our forefathers. But do we have more happiness than our forefathers? There might be different answers for this question. To find out the correct answer, let’s compare the different aspects of our forefathers and us.

Social Connectivity

Social connectivity means how a person is socially connected with the people of the society. Our older generation and present generation, both are connected with the people of the society but  in different ways. Earlier, people were physically connected with the society but today’s generation are virtually connected with the society.

Through social media, we can connect to thousands of people present anywhere in the world. We can chat, talk, share our videos and photos on social media sites. But do these facilities prove that we are happier than our forefathers?

There was no social media earlier. People were more connected with society. This was the time when people used to celebrate festivals with their neighbours. No matter what your religion was, the friendship between different religions used to survive till the end. Children used to go to each other’s house to play games. Ladies’ evenings used to be spent in gossipings with each other. The transfer of household things like sugar, salt were common then. The Indian society was living like a family in the earlier days. Is Indian society the same today?  Definitely, ‘Not’.

Today, the busy urban culture has decreased the physical social connectivity between the people. People living in a four wall apartment don’t even know who is living in their neighborhood. Everyone is just busy with his/her work and doesn’t have the time to sit with his/her neighbours. No matter how much social media connects people at a global level, it can’t be compared with the real happiness which exists in the physical connectivity with the people.

Technology

Our generation has seen a huge development in terms of technologies. The new smartphones, the LCD TVs, the new laptops are enough to keep people busy in themselves. Many of us must have seen parents busy on their smartphones rather than fully taking care of their children. Today, a school going girl or boy doesn’t feel the need of a friend. This is because they are so busy with games and YouTube on smartphones that they don’t crave to play with other children. It is not wrong to say that today the developing technologies have taken the place of humans in our life.

However, can these technologies provide us real happiness? Can smartphones provide us the love and affection we crave some day in our life? This is a deep matter of thinking.

Let’s once think who is much happier ? Older generation with no technologies or present generation with so much technology? The reality here is we have smart technologies but these technologies are not giving us real happiness but temporary joy. Earlier, people had no technologies but at least have the time to be happy unlike today’s generation. Our forefathers didn’t have smartphones but had the time to deliver to their children.

Imagine the scenario if our older generations would also have smartphones and laptops? Would we get the same upbringing as today? Definitely, Not. Thankfully, our forefathers didn’t have these technologies, otherwise we would not be able to get their love and affection. Like today’s parents, they would also have shifted their focus and love to smartphones more than us.

Career Oriented Life

Today our life has become too career oriented. Everybody wants to build a successful career whether it is man or woman. The competition level in the corporate sector, education, IT and other fields is increasing day by day.  More skilled personalities are required in high paid jobs today. So, in the hunt for success, people have detached themselves from society. The goal oriented people have hardly any time to focus on happiness and other aspects of life other than success.

The scenario was different in the earlier days. Most of the people were busy with farming activities and other small level jobs. Only one in 10 people used to go for higher education and for high paid jobs. Marriage at the right time was an important element in man and woman’s life earlier. The run to get success was not that fast as today. Our forefathers were happy and satisfied in their small jobs and little money unlike today’s generation.

Women’s Independence

There have come a lot of positive and negative changes in our society. Women’s independence is one of the positive changes which our forefathers’ society lacks. Earlier, women were not so active about their career. Their main aim was to get married and successfully run a family. However, this is not the case today.

Our present generation women are also career focussed like men and want to be independent. Marriage has become a secondary thing in today’s people’s lives. The women preferring their career over marriage might be busier in their life but it is a sign of progressive society.

As the women are getting more independent, the divorce rate in India is also increasing. Girls are often blamed for ruining their married life due to their careers. But, there are a lot of positive aspects of women’s Independence also.

Earlier, women had to live with their abusive husbands because they were dependent on their husbands. Today, an independent woman can take a stand and divorce her abusive husband. We should applaud today’s generation for promoting women in every field more than our older generation.

We can’t see divorce as a measurement of women’s happiness and unhappiness. But we can agree to the fact that our progressive society is somewhere snatching our time for being happy with our closed ones.

Conclusion:-

After comparing all the above aspects, we can’t draw an exact conclusion that ‘Are we happier than our forefathers or not? However, we can definitely feel that our forefathers had experienced more real happiness than us.

Earlier people were less developed, less educated but were much happier and satisfied than the present generation. They used to be simple and nature lovers and were happy in every small thing.

Those were the times when neighbours were like a family. They used to share their problems with each other. People of different religions and castes used to celebrate each other’s festivals and happiness. Those were the real happiness which we hardly see today. Humans have become robots today who have hardly any time to smile. This is sad but also a bitter truth of today’s world.

LGBTQ And The Indian Cinema https://arabinda.me/lgbtq-and-the-indian-cinema/ https://arabinda.me/lgbtq-and-the-indian-cinema/#respond Wed, 29 Jun 2022 06:31:07 +0000 https://arabinda.me/?p=2487 LGBTQ And The Indian Cinema Read More »

]]>
Lgbtq is a burning topic in today’s world. The demand for equal rights and equal  positions in society is something that is concerned with every LGBTQ member. Today one of the biggest mediums which is educating people about LGBTQ is Indian cinema. Directors and producers today are actively making films on the struggle of LGBTQ people. This is one of the good changes in our film industry which is appreciable.

Badhai Do- The Struggle Of Gay Couple

Talking about one of the recent films based on lgbtq, is ‘Badhai Do’. Rajkumar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar starrer ‘Badhai Do’ contains all the elements necessary for showing the struggle of a lesbian girl and a gay boy. Rajkumar Rao’s depiction of a gay police cop and Bhumi Pednekar’s role of a lesbian physical teacher are well convincing to connect with the characters. The film shows how a gay and a lesbian hide their real identity fearing the embarrassment from the society.

The family pressure of marriage over Shardul (Rajkumar Rao) and Sumi ( Bhumi Pednekar) forces them to tie themselves in an unhappy married life. This is a story of every gay/ lesbian in our society who involves themselves in a forceful marrige just because of the fear of the society. Also the amount of difficulties comes in a gay/ lesbian couple’s life during maintaining a same sex relationship is well shown in Badhai Do. The hide and seek life that a homosexual couple in films has to live forces us to think about the plight of the similar couple in real life.

However, it seems that slowly but some people in our society are accepting the gay romance. The way Sumi’s romance with Rimjhim and Shardul romance with Guru in Badhai Do were appreciated by the audience, it shows the mentality of a progressive society.

Other Films Based On LGBTQ

Not only Badhai Do, but movies like Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga, Bombay talkies, Shubh Mangal Jyada Shabdhan, Aligarh etc have also broken the stereotype of homosexuality. Before Badhai do, Rajkumar Rao had done another LGBTQ film, ‘Aligarh’ in 2016. This film also focussed on the gay romance between two men.

Apart from men, seeing the leading actresses of Bollywood like Sonam Kapoor, Bhumi Pednekar doing a film based on such a bold topic of lesbian romance is much appreciated.

‘Ek ladki ko dekha toh aisa laga’ starring Sonam Kanpoor was released in 2018 which was a burning topic then. The film had shown how a lesbian girl fights with her family to live with the partner of her choice. Almost every lgbtq based movie has the same message that the society should accept lgbtq members and treat them equally.

In the above list of films made on lgbtq, Rajpal Yadav and Rubina Dilaik starrer, ‘Ardh’ is the latest entry. The film has been released on an OTT platform on 10 June, 2022.

History Of LGBTQ Cinema

Seeing the history, we can notice that a gay or lesbian character has been mainly  used as a side character in Bollywood films to add entertainment. Mainstream movies based on lgbtq are still very few in number.

‘Fire’ which stars Shabana Aazmi was one of the first mainstream movies which focused on lesbian romance. The film was released in 1996 but was very ahead of its time. In the same year, Bomgay, a short film based on gay romance was also released.

The Opposition On LGBTQ Films

When a film is made on the bold topic of lgbtq romance, a large section of people oppose it. There are people in our society who believe that same gender romance is a crime and it should not be promoted. From ‘Fire’ to ‘Ek ladki ko aisa laga’ every lgbtq film has received backlash for promoting homosexual romance. No matter what, our government has provided equal rights to LGBTQ community, but still people are not ready to accept them.

LGBTQ On Indian Television

While cinema is making good efforts to educate people on lgbtq topics, television also doesn’t lack behind in this. Rashmi Sharma’s produced show, ‘Shakti: Astitva Ke Ahsaas Ki’ drew a lot of attention for showing a transgender woman’s story. Rubina Dilaik and Vivian Disena were the main leads in the serial. ‘Shakti’ was one of the biggest and most appreciated efforts in television’s history to touch the sensitive issue of transgender.

Indian Laws Made For LGBTQ

In Indian constitution, there are many laws made which protects the lgbtq community from social discrimination. Let’s see some of these laws.

  • Article 15 of the constitution says that no person should be discriminated based on his/her caste, religion, race gender and sex.
  • Transgender Persons  Act:- This  act was adopted in 2019. The act prohibits discrimination against any transgender in education sector,  employment and in healthcare services. According to this act, a transgender should not be denied the access of any goods, services and accomodation.

Qualitative Over Quantitative

Today Indian Cinema is changing in both qualitative and quantitative terms. Qualitative films like Badhai Do, Kashmir Files are awaring the people about lgbtq community and history of Kashmir pandit respectively. But there are dozens of films which are earning just because of vulgarity and bold scenes. So, it is us who have to decide carefully which film we should watch and which we shouldn’t.

LGBTQ Cinema- An Effort To Change The Mentality

The discrimination of LGBTQ community is a major problem in our Indian society as well as in the outside world. More films which showcase the plight and challenges of a gay should be highlighted and promoted. These handful of efforts will not instinctively change the mindset of people, but will slowly create a sense of social acceptance for the LGBTQ community.

Today, cricket is the most popular game in India. The amount of craze audiences have for cricket can’t be compared to any other game. Despite being so popular, cricket is not the national sport of India but it is hockey.  Hockey has not yet been declared a national sport by law, but the status of a national sport is given to hockey in all books.

There is a golden history  behind hockey being the national game of India. Let us know the history and achievements of the Indian hockey.

History Of Hockey In India

Hockey was introduced in India by the British Government in the late 19th century.Hockey was introduced in India by the British Government in the late 19th century.

Hockey was introduced in India by the British Government in the late 19th century. In the beginning, hockey was introduced as a popular school game. Within a very short period of time, hockey  became very popular among Indians. There were many reasons behind the instant popularity of hockey.

Firstly, there were many empty grounds in India during that time. Large spaces made it easier for hockey to build its place among Indians. Secondly, hockey was a game which didn’t require much complicated equipment to play. So, it was easy for the Indian people to adopt hockey in their daily games. Hockey had become the first choice of youths and children in schools.

Then came the time when the British Government included hockey in the Indian Army in 1850. Soon after five years, the first hockey club of India was established in Kolkata in 1855.

After the formation of the hockey club, major national level hockey competitions  began to take place. Beighton Cup and Aga Khan tournaments in Calcutta and   Mumbai respectively further popularized hockey.  The popularity of hockey was more seen in the  erstwhile provinces of Bombay and Punjab.

The Golden Era Of Indian Hockey In Olympics

The history of the Indian hockey team in the Olympic Games has been illustrious. India won 6 gold medals in the Olympics from 1928 to 1956. The year from 1928 to 1956 is also referred to as the ‘Golden Era of Indian Hockey’. During this, the great hockey player of the Indian hockey team, Major Dhyan Chand, illuminated the name of India all over the world.

The Indian hockey team first participated in the Olympic competition held in Amsterdam in 1928. During the competition, the Indian team did not allow the opposing team to score a single goal in five matches. India won the gold medal for the first time in the Amsterdam Olympics. This was the time when hockey was given the status of national sport of India in 1928.

India again won gold medals in the Olympics of Los Angeles (1932) and Berlin in 1936 making a hat- trick. The cycle of winning gold in Olympics continued till 1956.  However,  the victory of the Indian hockey team in the 1948, 1952 and 1956 Olympics was more special. This is because, India was playing as an independent nation in all these olympics.

Between 1928 and 1956, India won a total of 6 gold medals in  the Olympics. That’s why the period from 1928 to 1956 is named as the golden era of Indian hockey.

Major Dhyan Chand- ‘The Magician Of Hockey

Major Dhyan Chand led India to victory in many Olympic matches on his own. He was  playing for the United Provinces team when he got selected in the Indian hockey team for 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. In the Amsterdam Olympics, India had scored 29 goals. Out of 29 goals, 14 goals were scored alone by Major Dhyan Chand.

Major Dhyan Chand drew a lot of appreciation for his amazing game during the Olympics. International newspapers often used to call him the ‘Magician of hockey’. The wizard of hockey played his last Olympics in 1936. He was also the captain in the 1936 Berlin Olympics.

In 2021, the name of  Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award was changed to Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award. PM Modi through his tweet had announced that Dhyan Chand’s name would be added to the Khel Ratna Award. This was one of the great initiatives taken by the government to honour the legacy of Major Dhyan Chand.

Achievements Of Indian Hockey

  • Today, the Indian hockey team has a total of 8 gold medals, 1 silver medal and a bronze medal in the Olympics.
  • India also got the membership of the International Hockey Federation in 1927.
  • Men’s hockey team made India proud by winning the  world cup title in 1975.
  • The Indian hockey team won gold at the 1968 Asian Games. Before this, the Indian hockey team had won silver medals at the 1958 and 1962 Asian Games.

The Women’s Hockey Team Achievements

Not only men, but women have also represented India in international hockey competitions. In 1974, the women’s hockey team made its first appearance internationally at the inaugural women’s Hockey World Cup. The women’s team finished the tournament at a creditable fourth. In the commonwealth Games 2002, the women’s team won gold for the country.

Furthermore, the women won silver and bronze In the 2006 commonwealth Games and Asian Games respectively. The women again made India proud by winning silver at the 2018 Asian Games. It was a proud moment for India, when the women’s team qualified for 2016 Rio Olympics. This was the first time in the 36 years that the women’s team had qualified.

Reviving The Old Glory Of The National Sport

After ruling in the Olympics for more than 2 decades, India saw the gradual decline of the men’s hockey team. It was a huge disappointment for India, when the hockey team didn’t qualify for the Beijing Olympics. They hadn’t even qualified for the 2006 commonwealth Games. After a lot of disappointments in various hockey tournaments, the hockey team had needed a comeback.

In the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the Indian team made a comeback by winning silver.  They also won bronze at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Then, the men’s hockey team began generating a ray of hope by qualifying in the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics.

Finally, the 41-year drought of medals in the Olympics ended in 2012. The Indian team made a thrilling comeback by winning the bronze medal.

Presently, the women’s hockey team is making good efforts to establish itself at the global level. On the other hand, the men’s hockey team is trying their best to revive the old glory of Indian hockey. Let’s see when the golden era of hockey again comes.

Conclusion:- We know today cricket has more fan base than hockey. The color of hockey may have faded in front of the popularity of cricket. But, no one can deny the fact that hockey with its golden era has left an indestructible mark in Indian history. At last we can say that past success of Indian hockey makes it worth referring to as a national sport.

Business Model Of IPL https://arabinda.me/business-model-of-ipl/ https://arabinda.me/business-model-of-ipl/#respond Fri, 10 Jun 2022 13:15:04 +0000 https://arabinda.me/?p=2185 Business Model Of IPL Read More »

]]>
IPL is considered as one of the biggest festival seasons of India. The excitement level of cricket fans during IPL is always  unmatchable. The ad breaks, the signature tune of IPl and many other things captivates our mind during an IPL season. But do you know how your favourite Indian tournament IPL earns money? Today, we will let you know about the business model of IPL. But before understanding the business model of IPL, you should know the history of IPL in India. Let’s discuss it.

How did the IPL start in India?

Indian Premier League ( IPL) is organised and controlled by the BCCI, the Indian cricket representative at International level. The idea of IPL tournament is said to have come from the similar tournament, ICL organised by a private company, Zee Entertainment Enterprises in 2007. The BCCI was unhappy with the ICL(Indian Cricket League)  seeing Indian cricketers going to play in the ICL. The Indian Cricket Board even announced a ban on cricketers who will play in the ICL. The salary of the players in the domestic tournaments were increased by the BCCI in order to stop the players from playing ICL. In short, the BCCI didn’t want a cricket league which was out of its control.

On 13 September, 2007, BCCI announced a tournament with the similar concept of ICL, that is ‘Indian Premier League’. However, Lalit Modi, the then Vice President of BCCI denied taking any inspiration from ICL. Since ICL didn’t get the required recognition by the BCCI and ICC, it ended in 2009 after organising 2 seasons.

The mega blockbuster seasons of IPL started in India from April, 2008 under the authority of BCCI. Now let’s understand what is the business model of IPL and how IPL teams earn money.

IPL Business Model

The BCCI is the governing body of the Indian Premier League and it’s a private entity. The Indian Government has no control in the regulations of BCCI and IPL .

However, BCCI is not the only component in the Business model of IPL. BCCI along with Broadcasters, Sponsors and IPL teams comprises the four main components of IPL Business model.

  1. Broadcasters

Broadcasters are the tv channels on which we watch IPL matches. For example, Star Sports channel has been broadcasting the IPL since 2018.

  1. IPL teams

IPL teams are generally owned by private companies and private individuals like big businessmen and famous celebrities. For example, Shah Rukh Khan owns the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team, while Reliance company owns the Mumbai Indians (MI) team.

  1. Sponsors

Sponsors are the private companies   who sponsor IPL, IPL teams and give ads to television channels. For example, Vivo, Dream 11, TATA are the various sponsors of the Indian Premier League.

  1. Board of Cricket Council of India(BCCI)

The India’s cricket board, BCCI has the authority to organise the IPL tournament. The BCCI earns a lot of  money from various sources by  organising the IPL.

How does the BCCI earn money from the IPL?

There are two main sources of revenue from which the BCCI gets money. These are:

  1. Sponsors
  2. Broadcasters

Sponsors

We very well know, big national and international companies sponsor their ads during the IPL. There are mainly  two types of sponsors who give money to the BCCI for their brand promotion.

  1. Title Sponsors

Companies pay a lot of money to the BCCI to become the title sponsor of an IPL season. We have seen brands or companies’ names used along with the name of  IPL. For example, DLF IPL, Pepsi IPL, Vivo IPL, TATA IPL etc.

For the first five seasons of the IPL, DLF had become the title sponsor of the tournament by paying Rs. 40 crore per year to the BCCI.

During the 6th season, Pepsi had sponsored the IPL by paying 79 crore to the BCCI. Vivo then took over the position of title sponsor by paying an amount of Rs. 100 crore per year in 2016-17 and Rs. 400 crore per year during 2018 and 2019. In 2020, Vivo being a Chinese company had to withdraw from title sponsorship due to tensions between India and China. Dream 11 had then sponsored the IPL season in 2020.

Vivo regained its position as title sponsor in 2021 by paying a hefty amount of Rs. 440 crore per year to the BCCI. In the present season of IPL, TATA company is the title sponsor. According to media reports, TATA is expected to pay an amount of Rs. 330 crore per year to the BCCI. Also, TATA has signed this contract for two years. This means in 2022 also, TATA will be the title sponsor of the IPL.

  1. Official sponsors

Official sponsors are the brands which sponsor different aspects or things of IPL. For example, CEAT Tyres sponsors the strategy break of IPL by paying 30 Crore to the BCCI. In the same way, we have heard terms like Dream 11 Game Changer of the match, Cred Power Play etc. All these terms define the companies sponsoring the different parts of IPL.

It is important to know that whatever BCCI earns from the title and official sponsors, it takes 50% of the revenue and gives the other 50% to the IPL teams. It is estimated that BCCI earns approx 210 crore from official sponsors.

Broadcasters

By giving rights of broadcasting the IPL to broadcasters, BCCI earns a huge sum of money. BCCI in exchange of money gives the authority to tv channels that they can broadcast the IPL. For example, BCCI had got a sum of Rs. 8200 crore for giving media rights to SONY for broadcasting IPL for 10 seasons on its channel. In 2016, Star Sports purchased the media rights to broadcast IPL in exchange for 3,300 Crore per year from the BCCI. Also, Star Sports gets more revenue through ads than the amount it spends on purchasing the media rights. Star Sports charges 14.5 lac from companies for broadcasting a 10 sec ad on its channel.

Again, the revenue which comes from the broadcasters, BCCI takes its 50% and gives another 50% to IPL teams .

How do IPL teams earn money?

Companies, Businessmen and Celebrities spend a lot of money in buying an IPL team. It is estimated that an IPL team owner has to spend a minimum of 200 crore for the maintenance of his team. The maintenance includes players’ salary,  transportation and training. But how does the team owner manage to spend such a hefty amount on players? How do the IPL teams make money? Let’s discuss it.

IPL team owners actually earn a lot from team sponsors, BCCI and other sources. Here are the main revenue generating bodies for IPL teams.

  •  BCCI shares 50 % of its revenue with IPL teams. This is one of the primary sources of money for IPL teams .
  • Team sponsors are the main revenue generating body for IPL teams. Companies sponsor the jerseys of the players of a particular team. Brands give money to IPL teams and in exchange IPL teams’ players wear jerseys having multiple logos of the brands. On an average, an IPL player has 6 logos of sponsored brands on his jersey, 2 logos on pants and 2 logos on cap.
  • Third revenue generating body for IPL teams is ticket money. When a team plays in its home stadium, then it gets 80% of the ticket money, while the Home State Cricket Association takes the other 20%. For example,  Mumbai Indians will take 80% of the ticket money if it is playing in Wankhede stadium of Mumbai. Every team gets an equal opportunity to play in its home stadium.
  • IPL teams merchandise their jerseys, keyrings, mobile covers, pants, caps etc to make money in the market. The teams having high brand value make more money through merchandise and business.
  • The last source of money for IPL teams is the winning price of the IPL trophy. The winning IPL team gets 20 crore, the Runner-up gets 13 crore and the loser of qualifier-2 and eliminator gets 7 crore and  6.5 crore respectively.

Conclusion:- Today, IPL itself has become a brand name in India as well as outside India. The money this tournament earns can’t be compared to the earnings of any other cricket tournament in the world. This is the power of IPL that even daily soaps’ TRPs go down during IPL days. At last, it is not wrong to say that India is very lucky to have the IPL.
